  • Open to for-profit and non-profit startups.
  • Startups may be focused in any area of health and wellbeing, including but not limited to clinical care, public health, community-based health, nutrition, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Startups may also focus on core operational areas, such as health-focused logistics, fintech, or edtech solutions.
  • Solutions directly impacting a determinant of health must be able to clearly explain the health impacts of their business, and why creating connections in the health space would be strategic for their growth.
  • Solutions may be focused on both the public or private sectors and may have a business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-consumer (B2C) approach.

They had a very intense week with speed networking, pitch exercises, a storytelling workshop with Benjamin Delahaye, developing Business Model Canvas with Aurélie Moser ???? Boosting your innovations, a Hackathon at Geneva Hub for Global Digital Health (GDHUB) a trip to the mountains and much more.

Program Details

Lafiya Innovators is a six-month incubation and acceleration program taking place in three locations throughout West Africa and Latin America. Each regional cohort will combine community collaboration with specialized health and business expertise, providing entrepreneurs with a locally-rooted, globally-connected experience.

Participating startups will be enrolled in a regional cohort hosted in Accra (Ghana), Dakar (Senegal), or Medellín (Colombia). Early-stage startups will grow their professional network, establish a basic business model, and develop a minimum viable product. Mid-stage startups will further iterate and expand on their existing business model and complete the due diligence process for fundraising.

How to apply

What we are looking for?

The program is open to non-profit and start-ups. Businesses can focus on any area of health and well-being, including but not limited to clinical care, public health, community health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.

Startups can also focus on operational health areas, such as logistics or fintech or edtech solutions. Solutions can come from both the public and private sectors and can have a B2B or B2C approach. Likewise, intraentrepreneurship projects of already constituted organizations will be accepted.

Solutions that directly impact one or more Determinants of Health must be able to clearly explain their health impacts and why being part of the Lafiya Innovators program is strategic for their growth.

What is the first phase?

The startups selected for the first phase of the health entrepreneurship program – Lafiya Innovators will receive:

  • An initial diagnosis of your startup focused on health, in order to define its baseline and refine the program’s support
    +10 group spaces for capacity building, such as: innovative product development, business model, operation strategy, brand and marketing plan, sales plan, legal strategy and formalization, financial strategy and management skills.
  • 4 sessions of personalized guide throughout the program, helping you to apply the learnings of the workshops and giving you access to a network of experts.
  • Up to 5 consultancies with local experts in tax strategy, financial enlistment, intellectual property management and legal route.
  • You can participate in 3 Speed Networkings, to detonate the relationship of your Startup focused on health with the local, national and international ecosystem.
  • You will receive discounts and free services from program partners, such as Amazon Web Services and Hubspot.
  • You will finish your support by doing your pitch in the DemoDay, in which you will be able to present your Startup to an audience of investors and support entities of the national ecosystem.
  • You will be an Alumni Lafiya Innovators.
  •  +10 workshops.
What is second phase?

The winning Startups will be selected by a jury panel for the Second Phase of the Lafiya Innovators program:

This phase will allow the health-focused startup to access resources to continue developing its product, after approval of a work plan, and to take part in a trip, with all expenses paid, to the entrepreneurship and health ecosystem of Basel, Switzerland.

Objectives of the program

The Lafiya Innovators program has multiple partners interested in the mission of promoting business models that foster health and wellbeing solutions: 

  • Find and select businesses with high growth potential
  • Expand the ability of businesses to attract investment, internationalization and measurement of impact
  • Prepare the leadership profile of selected companies for expansion of the business
  • Generate strategic connections between the various actors of the national and international ecosystems
  • Facilitate market opening and access to networks for the expansion of the activity of the selected businesses
  • Inspire a new generation of companies aimed at strengthening the innovation chain around health and well-being
Selection process for the programme

Desired state of business

An enterprise in acceleration or consolidation stage will generally have the following characteristics:

Characteristics:

  • Has a product / portfolio already validated in the market
  • It is in a TRL 8 or 9. TRL (Technology Readiness Levels) are categories which indicate the degree of novelty and/or market approach of a project
  • It is on a CRL 7, 8 or 9. The CRL (Commercial Readiness Level) or commercial maturity, are a complement to the TRL and help us determine the commercial development of the startup
Requirements for applying
  • Be a company in acceleration, consolidation or growth stage.
  • Have an initial sales level.
  • The company must be located in Colombia, Cambodia, Senegal or Ghana .
  • Have availability of 4 hours per week, during the 5 months of program, for its activities.
  • You must be able to demonstrate that the product or service you offer has an impact on the Determinants of Health, according to WHO
  • The company must have a direct impact on SDG 3, Health and Wellbeing
  • You must assign 1 person as responsible for the program
  • The responsible person must have a level of English that allows the startup to interact and relate to different spaces and networks of the program. The above will be verified in the interview of the selection process
Contractual relationship

Participation in the program will be formalized through the signing and acceptance of Terms and Conditions, document in which the rights and obligations of the parties are established. Under no circumstances shall it be established, as the consequence of the activities of the programme, a link of a working nature, social security between any of the entities involved and the Members and representatives of business.

Travel expenses

Expenses associated with the visit, specifically: air fares and accommodation.

Impact measurement

The companies selected for the present version of the Lafiya Innovators programme, must be available to provide information related to the impact the program had in its business, 3, 6 and 12 months after the termination their participation. This in order to facilitate the process of gathering information by program managers.

Developed by Impact Hub Basel – and implemented in collaboration with Impact Hub Accra, Impact Hub Dakar, Impact Hub Medellín, and Impact Hub Phnom Penh – the program supports ambitious entrepreneurs throughout the venture lifecycle, from determining a basic business model to completing the due diligence process.
